AISI 304 vs 316L stainless steel in industry – when to choose which grade?
In practice, selecting the right stainless steel grade often comes down to two materials: AISI 304 and AISI 316L. Although both belong to the same austenitic steel group and appear very similar at first glance, their performance properties differ enough that it’s worth consciously matching them to a specific application.
What makes AISI 304 steel unique?
AISI 304 is the most versatile stainless steel, used in many industries. Composed primarily of chromium and nickel, it is relatively corrosion-resistant and easily machined (including welding). This steel performs well in less aggressive environments, primarily in the food industry, for the production of tanks, pipelines, and structural components. AISI 316L – kiedy potrzebna jest większa odporność
More demanding conditions require the use of steel with higher corrosion resistance. This is where AISI 316L excels. The addition of molybdenum in this alloy improves resistance to chlorides and reduces the risk of pitting corrosion. The “L” designation indicates a reduced carbon content, minimizing the risk of intergranular corrosion. This makes 316L steel a popular choice in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in installations operating in marine environments.
Key Differences in Practice
From the user’s perspective, the most important difference between these materials comes down to their degree of corrosion resistance. Under standard conditions, AISI 304 is perfectly adequate and helps reduce investment costs, while in environments with moisture, salt, or aggressive chemicals, 316L steel retains its properties much longer. As a result, choosing a more expensive material often proves more cost-effective in the long run.
How to choose the right grade?
There is no single universal solution – everything depends on the conditions in which a given installation will operate. If the environment is relatively mild, AISI 304 will be a reasonable choice. However, if the installation is exposed to chlorides, cleaning agents, or operates in harsh conditions, AISI 316L is a better choice.
